Shell River Watershed

Birdtail-Assiniboine Watershed

In 2006 the Lieutenant Governor in Council designated Lake of the Prairies Conservation District as the Water Planning Authority for the Shell River watershed, and as part of the joint Water Planning Authority for the Assiniboine  West-Birdtail River Watershed, along with the Upper Assiniboine River Conservation District.  As such, LPCD has begun developing an integrated watershed management plan (IWMP) for each of these two watersheds.

This process will be conducted in consultation with the Council of any municipality located wholly or partially within the watersheds, any band, as defined by the Indian Act (Canada), that has reserve land within the watersheds, and the residents within the watersheds.
The purpose of an IWMP is to identify issues relating to the protection, conservation or restoration of water, aquatic ecosystems and drinking water sources in the watershed, and to develop a plan of action that will address the issues and promote the sustainable use and management of the land, water and related natural resources within  the watershed.  It is anticipated that this three-year process will be completed in 2008.
